There is evidence-based research to suggest that sports and physical activity can enhance cognitive development in several ways.

  1. Exercise Promotes Blood Flow and Oxygen to Brain
Regular physical activity has been shown to increase blood flow and oxygen delivery to the brain, which can help to improve cognitive function. Studies have also shown that exercise can lead to the production of growth factors that promote the growth of new brain cells and the formation of new neural connections.

  2. Improve Cognitive Focus
Sports and physical activity can help to improve attention, focus, and memory. Research has shown that children who participate in sports have better academic performance and are better able to concentrate and stay on task in the classroom.

  3. Sports Provide Platform for Social Skills Development
Sports can help to develop important social skills, such as teamwork, communication, and leadership, which can also have a positive impact on cognitive development. Developing social skills recruits a different part of the brain (medial prefrontal cortex), which can contribute to greater cognitive development.

  4. Use Kickboxing as the Sport for your Child
With the strong research to support the use of sports as a tool to build cognitive development, use the sport of Kickboxing to build your child's development today! Our kids kickboxing program are perfect for ages 3 to 13, with the syllabus accredited by the World Association of Kickboxing Organizations (WAKO).

Research has shown that children learn better through play. Play can come through many forms, but for today, we'll focus on play through Kickboxing.

What is Play?
Play essentially is allowing a child to have fun through activities. Play provides opportunities for children to explore, experiment, and problem-solve in a safe and enjoyable environment. Through play, children can develop social skills, language skills, cognitive skills, and physical skills.

How Play can Benefit your Child?
For example, when children engage in imaginative play, they are able to practice communication and social interaction skills, as well as develop their creativity and problem-solving abilities. When children play with blocks or puzzles, they are developing their spatial reasoning and math skills. And when children engage in physical play, such as running, jumping, and climbing, they are developing their gross motor skills and overall physical health.

Play is also an effective way for children to learn and retain new information. When children are interested and engaged in what they are learning, they are more likely to remember and apply that knowledge later on.

Is there Play during our Kickboxing classes?
At the end of each class, we introduce fun kickboxing-based games to reinforce the learnings they have undergone. This helps to strengthen the learning experiences for the child and enhance the absorption of the skills.

Therefore, play is an important part of early childhood education, and parents and educators should encourage children to engage in a variety of play-based activities to promote their development and learning.

Benefits of Kickboxing
Making friends is an essential part of a child's social and emotional development, and it plays an important role in their overall well-being. Here at Active Zone, we encourage children to build meaningful friendships which will help enhance their social skills development. Here are some reasons why it's important for kids to make friends:

  1. Socialization
Making friends allows kids to learn how to socialize and interact with others. This helps them develop social skills such as communication, problem-solving, empathy, and cooperation. This skill will be highly beneficial for children regardless of any age!

  2. Self-Esteem
Having friends can boost a child's self-esteem and confidence. When children feel accepted and valued by their peers, they are more likely to have a positive self-image. Research has shown that low self-esteem has often lead younger people to develop negative disorders such as depression and anxiety. By building positive self-esteem, we reduce the chances of developing these negative disorders which can plaque the rest of a child's life.

  3. Fun and Enjoyment
Friends provide kids with opportunities to have fun and enjoy their time. Playing games, exploring new places, or just hanging out can create happy memories that last a lifetime.

  4. Exposure to Diversity
Making friends with children from different backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs can broaden a child's perspective and help them appreciate diversity. These experiences and skill will stay with them for the rest of their lives, allowing them to transfer these useful skills into their next schooling journey and even through to their career.

Overall, having friends helps children develop important social and emotional skills, feel supported, and enjoy life.

What Age Should My Child Learn Kickboxing and Why?

Children can start learning sports as early as 3 years old through physical activities such as running, throwing and catching a ball, playing simple games and martial arts (such as kickboxing).

There are 4 reasons why it is beneficial for kids to learn sports at an early age.

  1. Prevent Obesity and Boost Immunity
A key benefit, is helping your child build healthy amounts of muscle tissue and bone growth. These physical attributes contribute to a healthy metabolism, lowering the risk of child obesity which is prevalent in today's modern age. Research has shown that exercising boosts the immunity system and plays and active role in delaying aging. Such qualities will ensure your child will have a higher quality of life in the years ahead. In a previous blog post, we uncovered the physical benefits of learning sports.

  2. Develop Soft Skills (also known as 'Life Skills')
In today's context, there are instances where soft skills are prized of greater significance than academic qualities. Learning sports teaches kids important life skills such as teamwork, communication, leadership, perseverance, and discipline. Such soft skills are usually not taught in academic settings, but through play (which sports become the medium for).

  3. Learn How To Cope with Losing
In life, we can never win 100% all the time. As much as we love our children and want them to win as much as possible, it is important for children to learn how to lose, face defeats or even get rejected. Through such situations, they learn how to cope with winning and losing, and how to handle pressure and challenges. This will build their resilience and coping mechanisms, allowing them to handle challenges and greater responsibilities in future.

  4. Develop Social Skills
Sports provide an opportunity for kids play and interact with the others in their cohort. The Covid-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted children's play time and social experiences with their peers. Through sports, they socialize and make friends outside of school, which can improve their self-esteem and confidence.

However, it is important to note that children should not be forced into sports if they are not interested. It is essential to find a sport that they enjoy and to make sure that the experience is positive and fun for them.

Children and Kids practicing kickboxing
Kickboxing for your child can provide a wide range of benefits. For children, they stand to gain both physical and mental benefits. Some of the key benefits of kids kickboxing include:

  1. Improve Physical Fitness
Kickboxing is a high-intensity sport that can help children improve their strength, endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular health. Regular kickboxing training can also help children maintain a healthy weight and improve their overall physical fitness.

  2. Enhance Coordination and Motor Skills

  3. Boost self-confidence
Due to the age of social media, younger children have a tendency to be more self-conscious today. Learning and mastering new skills can boost children's self-confidence and self-esteem. As children improve their kickboxing skills and techniques, they will feel more confident in their abilities and become more willing to take on new challenges.

  4. Improved Discipline and Focus
Kickboxing requires focus and discipline, which can help children develop these important skills. By following instructions, paying attention to their surroundings, and practicing regularly, children can learn how to stay focused and disciplined.

Kickboxing can teach children basic self-defense skills and how to protect themselves in potentially dangerous situations. This can help children feel more empowered and confident in their ability to protect themselves.

Overall, kids kickboxing can provide a fun and challenging way for children to improve their physical fitness, coordination, and mental discipline while learning self-defense skills and boosting their self-confidence.
