Let's face it, every now and then the usual gym workout may feel a little mundane. Or perhaps your usual gym haunt has gotten really crowded and you're 5th in line waiting for your machine. It's time to ditch the gym gloves for some boxing gloves.

Why Should Women Learn Kickboxing?

There are a myriad of benefits to Kickboxing. A study in 2014* tracked the effects of Kickboxing training over the course of 5 weeks and found that it improved the following:

  1. Upper-body muscle power
  2. Aerobic power
  3. Anaerobic fitness
  4. Flexibility
  5. Speed
  6. Agility

Other non-physical benefits include:

  • Enhanced emotional regulation
  • Greater hormonal balance
  • Promotes higher sleep quality

With a whole list of benefits attached to kickboxing, you might be excited to get started, and we'll tell you how!

*The study was titled 'The effects of five weeks of kickboxing training on physical fitness', with each participant undergoing 3 kickboxing training sessions weekly for the duration of the study.

Step One: Identify Your Needs

When starting a new exercise program, it is important to identify your needs. Our needs constantly evolve at every each stage of our life with factors such as family, career and lifestyle contributing to these changes.

Here are some factors you can consider:

Needs

Group Class

Personal Training

Schedule

Prefers fixed schedule

Prefers flexibility (e.g. working odd hours, group class schedule not suitable, have a newborn to care for)

Exercise Program

No preference for exercise program

Prefers tailored approach (to tackle a specific need, medical condition or fitness goal)

Community

Prefers opportunities to make friends or exercise together with a friend

Prefers 1-on-1

(e.g. introvert or prefer privacy)

Personal Preference

No preference for instructor

Prefers a specific instructor whose strengths align with your goals

Price

Prefers to stretch their dollar

Willing to pay premium for the enhanced value

Step Two: Schedule A Trial

Perhaps one of the most unnerving thing - entering a new environment. You don't know anybody and there's a knot in your stomach because you don't know what to expect.

We aim to change that.

If you're scheduling a Group Class Trial, Instead of being thrown into a regular class where everybody knows what they're doing, we created an introductory session where nobody knows what they're doing. This is where you as a  first-time clients join in - a class where everybody is a beginner and learning together. There's something comforting in this environment because you don't feel out of place and everybody starts off on the same foot.

If you're scheduling a Personal Training Trial, then all your worries about anxiety in a group setting diminishes greatly. However, it can still be quite scary walking into your first session. Our team of instructors have decades of experience with them, regardless if you're a beginner or someone with years of experience, we can provide the most effective coaching to cater to your goals.

Step Three: Sign Up

If we pass the vibe check, then you can consider continuing your kickboxing journey with us. We offer a variety of options for you to choose from.

For group classes, we have a range of exercise programs, not just kickboxing, that are complementary to achieving your fitness goals.

For personal training, lock in your goals with our instructors and we'll draft up an action plan to help you achieve your fitness goals.

Whichever option you pick, you can be sure that your kickboxing journey with us will be 100% memorable.

If you're unsure about starting kickboxing, reach out to us and we'll be happy to guide you!

Perhaps your motivation with exercise is running low and you're looking to adventure into something new to keep fit with an element of fun. With martial arts becoming increasingly popular, the thought of trying it out flashes across your mind. You want to try but don't know where to start. Well then, Active Zone is the perfect place for you!

1) Non-Intimidating Women Only Environment

Martial arts gyms predominantly have a larger share of male clients. This means 1 or 2 out of every 10 class participants are males. If you are the sole female participant in that particular, this can be understandably quite intimidating.

You look around and everyone seems to know what they're doing and moving well, whereas you are totally un-coordinated, unsure of what to do, and practically a fish out of water. This makes you feel even more scared and you start to shy away, hoping for the time to pass quickly.

Active Zone offers a women-only environment, providing a comfortable atmosphere for you to try Kickboxing. Being surrounded by females lowers the pressure and puts you at ease. Women understand women, empathise with each other and even lending a helping hand at times. This is exactly the positive culture we aspire to create, as we recognise everyone's exercise journey is different. Some are just starting out while some are returning from pregnancy/ surgery. No matter which point of this journey you are at, you can be assured Active Zone is the right starting point.

2) Supportive Culture, Dependable Community

Exercising itself is a tough journey and we need all the help we can along the way. Most times we start our fitness journey alone, without friends. You starting alone, doesn't mean you stay alone. You're not just a classmate we know by name, we are strong believers in your fitness journey and a community you can depend on. Fellow classmates turn into lifelong friends, that's the positive culture we inculcate daily.

Sometimes work can get really tough. We understand, and we're here to let you kick to your hearts' content and help you bounce back stronger.

Our team of instructors invest time to understand your journey and how we can support you. Fitness habits, exercise tips, lifestyle hacks, you name it we got it. At the end of the day, we're all together on the same road, wanting to be healthier.

3) World Class Instructors, Beginner Friendly

Our team of instructors are the only ones in Singapore with a Kickboxing black belt, awarded by the World Association of Kickboxing Organizations (WAKO), the only kickboxing organisation recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Our team of instructors have decades of experience behind them, having taught people from all walks of life, ages and conditions.

Fun fact: In 2025 our team of instructors set the Singapore Book Of Records for the Largest Kickboxing Padwork Session with 276 students!

• Official record here: https://singaporerecords.com/largest-kickboxing-pad-work-session/

This doesn't mean we're here to train world champions. Instead we're here to coach you with world class standards. We have taught over 15,000 clients and 100 organizations since the 1990s, and we're here to ensure you can learn Kickboxing safely without fear.

In fact, we love to teach beginners because that's the best way to learn Kickboxing! We'll teach you from ground up, so you don't need any prior experience in martial arts.

If you're unsure about starting kickboxing, reach out to us and we'll be happy to guide you!

Active Zone - Ladies Kickboxing

Yes absolutely! Kickboxing is safe for women and even recommended to help you achieve your fitness goals!

When we were growing up, some of us may have never had the opportunity to choose our own sporting endeavour. Those decisions rested on our parents, and we trusted them fully. Now, as an adult with the freedom to make our own decisions, some of us choose stay the path, while others adventure into something new.

This decision to adventure into something new may come to you at 20-years old or even at 50-years old. Naturally the older we are, the more we worry about safety because the risk of injury increases ever so slightly with each round we take around the sun. And so we wonder, 'How Safe Is Kickboxing for Women?'

1) Fitness Kickboxing Is Perfectly Safe

When we think of Kickboxing, we think about 2 people standing in the right, fighting to the death. This is what is known as - Combative Kickboxing, where the emphasis is to win an opponent in a competition, tournament or a bout.

Another form of Kickboxing we would like to imagine, is Fitness Kickboxing, or Kickboxing Fitness. There are many types of Fitness Kickboxing ranging from LesMiles Body Combat to old school Billy Blanks Tae Bo workouts that has inspired the modern Cardio Kickboxing aerobic workouts.

Fitness Kickboxing also includes Non-combative Kickboxing training where you punch and kick on shields, bags and targets. This is the kickboxing training Active Zone specialises in, catering to women only.  Our flagship Active Kickboxing Fitness offers all the kickboxing with none of the fighting, making it the perfect workout.

2) Lower Risk of Injury in Kickboxing Fitness Training

The element of surprise when fighting an opponent contributes greatly to injury risks. With the fighting component removed, the risk of injury is reduced greatly. The classic phrase "bags don't hit back" is on our side for this one.

However, low injury risk doesn't mean no injury risk. The caveat is that you still have to execute the techniques with proper techniques and proper form.

3) Pregnant Mothers Can Do It Too

Women like Chontel Duncan and Australian athlete Caley Reece push the boundaries of what is possible when it comes to training. Both women advocate to 'keep doing what you love', because there's always a way. Being pregnant doesn't mean they should stop exercise and stop hitting pads.

This doesn't mean that you should jump into Kickboxing while you are pregnant. One of the key criterion to continue Kickboxing when you are pregnant is IF you have been active for the period BEFORE pregnancy. This means that you should have been exercising regularly prior and can therefore continue. Please consult your doctor for the appropriate medical advice.

4) Equipment Provides Safety

You'll gear up with boxing gloves so you don't punch barehanded on the bags or targets. Boxing gloves are created with dense, multi-layered foam and padding that is shock absorbent. This means every time you punch, your knuckles don't take the full impact of the punch.

Through kickboxing with equipment, whether you're wearing the boxing gloves or kicking a target, it makes the workout much more fun while adding a layer of safety. You worry less about hurting yourself and more on enjoying the class.

Kids Kickboxing at Active Zone (for ages 3 and up)

Kickboxing for your child can provide a wide range of benefits. For children, they stand to gain both physical and mental benefits. Some of the key benefits of kids kickboxing include:

1) Improve Physical Fitness

Kickboxing is a high-intensity sport that can help children improve their strength, endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular health. Regular kickboxing training can also help children maintain a healthy weight and improve their overall physical fitness.

2) Enhance Coordination and Motor Skills

Kickboxing involves a lot of movement, coordination, and agility, which can help children develop their motor skills and hand-eye coordination. #InjuryProof your child with improved motor skills, decreasing the likelihood of serious injuries when accidents (such as falls) happen.

3) Boost self-confidence

Due to the age of social media, younger children have a tendency to be more self-conscious today. Learning and mastering new skills can boost children's self-confidence and self-esteem. As children improve their kickboxing skills and techniques, they will feel more confident in their abilities and become more willing to take on new challenges.

4) Improved Discipline and Focus

Kickboxing requires focus and discipline, which can help children develop these important skills. By following instructions, paying attention to their surroundings, and practicing regularly, children can learn how to stay focused and disciplined.

5) Self-defense skills

Kickboxing can teach children basic self-defense skills and how to protect themselves in potentially dangerous situations. This can help children feel more empowered and confident in their ability to protect themselves.

Overall, kids kickboxing can provide a fun and challenging way for children to improve their physical fitness, coordination, and mental discipline while learning self-defense skills and boosting their self-confidence.
